METRO Wholesale Myanmar Becomes First EDGE-Certified Project in the Country

Yangon, 05 October 2020 – METRO Wholesale Myanmar Limited has been awarded with IFC’s EDGE certification for its warehouse in Thanlyin, Thilawa Special Economic Zone, marking the first EDGE green building certification in Myanmar. The certification was awarded by thinkstep-SGS, a leading global sustainability services and software business.

METRO Wholesale Myanmar incorporated cost-effective green building features, including energy-efficient air conditioning, insulation, low-flow plumbing fixtures, and environmentally-friendly building materials into its design. The building is projected to achieve 34 percent savings in energy, 37 percent savings in water, and 66 percent savings in the energy that is used to produce the materials. In addition to reducing utility costs, EDGE certification will help METRO Wholesale Myanmar to achieve a leadership position in promoting green standards in the market.

“METRO is committed to raising the bar in the food distribution industry in Myanmar. Therefore, we ensure that the highest standards are set in our state-of-the-art facility in Thilawa that is now EDGE certified. The EDGE certification is a result of our commitment towards achieving our sustainability goals whilst our green design and building construction allows us to save significantly on utilities now and in the future,” said Jens Michel, CEO of METRO Wholesale Myanmar.

METRO Wholesale Myanmar is increasing competitiveness and supporting food distribution in Myanmar, while ensuring its warehouse to become one of the first certified green buildings in Yangon,” said Jane Xu, IFC’s Country Manager for Myanmar and Thailand. “An IFC client, this company serves as a role model in the region for achieving both cost savings and environmental impact reduction.”

To date, IFC has invested over $5 billion globally in green buildings. METRO Wholesale Myanmar is one of the first companies in the sector to adopt resource-efficient building standards. The company offers a one-stop wholesale food service distribution for hotels, restaurants, catering firms, independent small retailers, and offices.
