METRO Wholesale Myanmar Kicks Off Construction of Thilawa

Yangon, Myanmar September 14 , 2017 – METRO Wholesale Myanmar, the Myanmar subsidiary of METRO Cash & Carry, one of the leading international wholesale and food specialists, today celebrated the groundbreaking for the construction of its warehouse in the Thilawa Special Economic Zone.
Mr.Dominique Minnaert, Senior Vice President of METRO Wholesale Myanmar, stated: “Today’s event marks the beginning of establishing METRO Cash & Carry’s footprint in Myanmar to provide high-quality and safe products along with professional service solutions. We believe that METRO Cash & Carry’s market entry will support Myanmar’s tourism industry’s growth. We aim to make a difference for our customers in terms of food safety and sustainability. In order to achieve these objectives, METRO Cash & Carry will introduce global best practices in supply chain management in its operations in Myanmar.”
The ceremony was performed in traditional Myanmar manner, with monks chanting auspicious verses and giving blessings. The construction on the 28,368 square meter plot is expected to be completed by end of 2018. The warehouse will be equipped with modern warehousing and storage facilities as well as logistic systems, operated according to high international quality standards. The facility will include refrigerated rooms ensuring cooling temperatures required to maintain the freshness and good quality. Further, processing and cleaning laboratories for fresh meat, fish, fruits and vegetables are value added services; plus storage space and offices.
METRO Cash & Carry’s joint-venture established in the country is widely regarded as a timely catalyst in bridging international distribution infrastructure and expertise with local producers of goods and produce. Showing support to the endeavor, significant personalities attended the ceremony, including government officials, Thilawa SEZ committee members and business partners.
METRO Wholesale Myanmar is also committed to supporting the development of local human resource, and is placing a priority on the recruiting staff from the local community. With the warehouse operation, the company is expected to create approximately 300 direct jobs, with an additional 1,000 indirect jobs. Further, METRO Wholesale Myanmar by sourcing local produce will also promote the country’s agricultural sector and will foster export opportunities through the company’s international sourcing channels, thus assuming a contributing role in the growth of Myanmar’s economy.
Through METRO Cash and Carry’s wholesale distribution platform, food and non-food high quality products as well as customized services will be delivered to the professional customers including hotels, restaurants, catering firms, independent retailers and offices.
